Remnants of Presence: A Continuation of Poetics of the Discarded

My work begins with the practice of noticing. Through slow, attentive walks in forests and urban spaces, I observe without naming, allowing overlooked fragments—branches, weeds, discarded packaging, and shifting patterns of light—to reveal themselves over time.
ARTIST STATEMENT
At the heart of Remnants of Presence is hope. I want viewers to move from curiosity and discomfort to a sense of possibility—questioning, feeling, and imagining new ways of relating to each other and the earth. The more people see and spend time with this work, the more awareness may ripple outward, fostering reflection on how we live, consume, and connect.
Through attention and care, new possibilities—ecological, human, and interconnected—can emerge.
PLEIN AIR PAINTING WORKSHOP
with artist and educator Lori Goldberg
Saturday, September 26
1:00–3:30 pm. Please meet at the Hearth Gallery.
Cost: $75
Spend an afternoon painting outdoors on beautiful Bowen Island. Lori will guide participants step by step through observing the landscape, choosing a composition, mixing colour, and building a painting, while encouraging each person to find their own way of seeing and develop their own artistic voice.
The focus will be on exploration, expression, and creating a personal response to place. All levels are welcome.
If it rains: The workshop will move indoors and continue with a studio-based variation on plein air painting.
MATERIALS TO BRING
Acrylic paints with retarder or extender, or oil paints
A few brushes in different sizes
Palette
Water container if using acrylics
Rags
Small canvas or primed canvas board, approximately 8 × 12 inches or similar
Lightweight folding chair
Hat
Layered clothing for changing weather
Some easels can be supplied.
Small primed canvas boards can also be provided for a minimal additional cost.

Lori Goldberg was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she lives, works, and teaches. Her painting practice has continued to evolve since the 1980s with over-arching themes of abstracted industrial and Pacific Northwest environments.
She has received many awards, including a fully-funded Tao Hua Tan Residency, Anhui Province, China, a Canada Council Grant, two Tony Onley Artist’s Project Scholarships and the Vermont Artist Award.
Her work is in many collections, including the Canada Art Bank, Ottawa, ON; Vancouver Contemporary Art Gallery; the City of Vancouver Art Collection; Schuster Group, Walton Lofts, Seattle, WA; and the Interstate Bank, San Francisco, CA.
Major exhibitions include the Hanmo Art Gallery, Beijing; South Main Gallery, Vancouver/ the Justine Barnike Gallery, Ontario/the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver/ the KX Kunst Auf Kampfnagel Gallery, Hamburg.
As an artist, Goldberg has always sought intersections with broader communities, developing collaborative and mutually instructive inquiries about how art can impact positive environmental changes. She has spearheaded socially engaged projects in Akumal, Mexico, Governor’s Island, NYC, Vancouver and Squamish BC.
She served for three years as the Provincial representative of C.A.R./F.A.C, a Canada-wide advocacy and education NPO.
Over the last two decades, Goldberg has taught at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
