Artist Profile
Art for Sea to Sky: Exploring the Science, Nature and Beauty of Atl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound is a solo art exhibition featuring new works by Bowen Island artist Di. The 13 paintings take viewers on a journey of remarkable Howe Sound- a glacial fjord just north of Vancouver’s metropolis and the traditional territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh peoples. The region has witnessed dramatic environmental changes in the past 100 years: pollutants from two pulp mills and a copper mine devastated the Sound’s ecology. But recovery has begun and the path forward sends a message of hope for the future. From deep sea glass sponge reefs to pods of orca and the alpine lakes of Garibaldi, viewers are challenged to see beyond Atl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound’s scenic vistas and explore a little more about what makes this a truly special place.
Di is a self-taught artist born and raised in British Columbia. Inspired by the natural beauty found on the West Coast she began to develop her unique and colorful art style after moving to Bowen Island in 2012. Painting with acrylic on canvas she puts a contemporary twist on local wildlife and nature scenes. Passionate about bridging the gap between art and science, she likes to use her paintings as a platform for education and conservation. Di has exhibited works at the Federation of Canadian Artists Gallery and Bateman Foundation Gallery of Nature, this is her second exhibit at the Hearth Gallery following her 2018 duo exhibition ‘The Art of Conservation’.
Art for Sea to Sky runs from July 8th – Aug 2nd at the Hearth Gallery on Bowen Island, BC. Opening reception on July 10th from 6-8 pm
