FEATURING: DIANA ZOE COOP

Colour is passionate, defining my approach to art making, and creating the physical centre for my spiritual self. The structure is created by the sky, oceans, and forest which ground me, but it is the azure, sage, emerald and indigo that set my canvas free.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

My art became less identifiable, more visceral. Uncertainty in our futures, isolation, and chaos gave rise to mark making as a refuge, and a road to inner strength. Storms reflected a change in perspective, their fury a place to lose myself. On the edge of the precipice I found my voice. Beneath the waves I drifted, weightless, calm, peaceful.

The vivid palette, diverse textures, rock, coral, and shells attached themselves to the canvas, as I created a world of my own, beneath the microscope of imagination. As the pandemic raged, I told my stories, painting myself to other worlds, where pain no longer existed. My crisis was healed through a tsunami of art making, as sixty paintings evolved over the course of two years. Finally, I could rest.  Colour is passionate, without question it defines how I work.

Art making is the physical centre for my spiritual self. The azure blue which finds its way into so much of my art is no accident. Like sky and ocean it grounds me and sets the canvas free. I paint what inspires me, the landscape I can see, the forests, flowers and foliage that surrounds me, the wild rivers and coastal shoreline. But at the end of the day, there is little that can compare to the sky, when the sunset is a fiery inferno, and you can hardly breathe from the transcendent beauty of the moment.
