GO FIGURE: Diane Buchanan & Bill Hoopes

August 16 - September 4

Artist pARTy: Sat August 19th from 6 to 8 pm

Using gestural relationships and vivid colour, Diane Buchanan intertwines the figure and nature, illustrating the co-existence of humanity and the world around us. Bill Hoopes uses the figure metaphorically to reveal humanity’s connection to current social, political and environmental issues.

Diane Buchanan Artist’s statement:

“I am interested in the passage of life through the liminal space that exists between the world of nature and the supernatural. I paint the body transfigured by that worldly transition and use colour to convey the accompanying emotional journey. My work is informed by Buddhism and by the supernatural environment of British Columbia, where I was born and educated, and now practice.”

Bill Hoopes - Artist Statement

“I spent a lot of time drawing as a child and received much praise for the works I was doing but it wasn't until my last two years of high school that I really saw painting and drawing as a calling. I graduated from high school in 1969 in Germany and spent the next four years working and traveling in Europe. My major focus was the multitudes of fine art galleries from The Louvre to The Prado, to the Vigeland Sculpture park Oslo and dozens more. I became enamoured with the painters of the Renaissance and the works of the Surrealists, and these influences have informed my pieces ever since.”
