On the Edge of Beauty
Exhibition: SEPTEMBER 1 - SEPTEMBER 27
Visual art allows us to transcend thought and can elevate us into the silent language of beauty.
The essence of beauty is the message that we are human, connected to ourselves, each other, and the natural world.
ON THE EDGE OF BEAUTY
The wild and spirited aspect of the natural world is revealed through sculpture and painting.
While extreme weather patterns and forest fires have shifted our attention, “On The Edge Of Beauty” explores how we connect with the natural world by the work of artists Cathryn Jenkins and Niina Chebry at the Hearth Gallery opening September 1st.
The exhibition features both sculpture and painting which expands and challenges the concept of “beauty” in the natural world. Whereas these oeuvres may be pleasing in design, colour or shape - an eagle, iceberg or bear also remind us of powerful natural forms which demand respect.
The experience of nature is often associated with the essence of beauty. The concept of beauty transcends thought, evoking a sense of wonderment, freedom and mindfulness. It allows for a connection to self and the natural world. A powerful storm or a dangerous swoop of an eagle demands respect, observed with a sense of awe. Cathy Jenkins and Niina Chebry both explore this phenomena from two extremely different paths.
Cathy Jenkin’s inspiration comes from the elements of nature. She sculpts from the line and form found in landscape, mountain peaks, the movement of fluttering leaves or the flight of a raptor. The day to day existence of the wild informs her attention from which she exposes the graceful power of native eagles, sea lions and bears. Jenkin’s art creates a sense of fluid movement and breathes life in the hardest of stone. Her highly polished bronze, serpentine, marble, and argillite beasts of sculpture invite both a visual and tactile experience.
Niina Chebry carves the paint to create icebergs in a state somewhere between the tranquil and the tempest. There is a sense of brooding - a silent moment before an eventual storm. These sculptural ice forms, sometimes transparent, sometimes crumbling, are set adrift on the open sea. They cast long reflections and shadows of some timeless moment of day and night. Powerful forces of nature and the fragility of the planet seem to rest on these tilting masses. Here the iceberg has become a metaphor, suggesting isolation, impermanence and the human condition.
