Swimmers

Pat Parsons - Acrylic

Encouraged by a photo of Bowen swimmers, Pat was in awe of this photo as it was just what she was looking for to inspire her next series. In honour of our intrepid swimmers, Pat has created a fun and fresh interpretation of colourful swimsuits and its wearers.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I am drawn to the richness of multi-themed artwork. In this exhibition I have tried to blend several themes in each collage:

(a) the floral pattern theme of bathing suit fabrics, and how they play out in different light and on the body.

(b) collage patterns made by creating various patterns with magazine photos or even cereal boxes or other forms of packaging; . These act sometimes in a dominant way and at other times subliminally.

(c) the individuals who are wearing or modeling the suits/clothing – here the pose of the body and corresponding shape on the canvas is important.

So the result of this fugue-like blending is that anonymous shapes are intertwined playfully with floral designs and people.

The challenge has been to balance all three themes. I have succeeded more in some areas than others.

In “Woman On Vacation”, for example, the painting of the fabric design plays against the design of the collage pieces quite clearly in the lower half of the canvas but not as fully in the upper half.

In “Beach Towel” where there is no third theme of a swimmer or person, the balance was easier to achieve and the intertwining glows.

But mostly the paintings, especially the abstract ones (smaller canvasses) are painted from a simple desire to create.

I hope the enjoyment and vitality I have had from creating this multi-themed art shines through and makes it come alive.

Bio:

in the 1960s, Patricia Parsons got her b.sc. in chemistry at queen’s university, an education that she describes as “a total waste of money,” and memorable only by the time she went away for the weekend because some singer-songwriter named neil was coming to visit, party, and burn a substantial hole in her blue sofa. so she went to the university of toronto, from whence she became an expert medical illustrator. a purveyor of all things creative, pat can draw, paint, sculpt, design and build an entire house from the ground up. the latter comes from her days as a landlady in the once-hippie neighbourhood of kitsilano in vancouver, b.c., but all the rest from a place deep inside. pat’s art is present in everything she does and you can just tell she is a deeply fulfilled person. all the same, she’s not afraid to play on the surface, and her most recent work prioritizes texture and pattern, incorporating gyp-rock, fabric, candy-wrappers, acrylic paint, cardboard and found metal.
