Kelly Ballard
Pip works in many mediums watercolour, pencil, acrylic, pastels but has a particular love for oil paints. She loves the fluidity of the paint. The diversity of it thick or translucent and the ability to move it around and mix it directly on the canvas. She paints intuitively, exploring colour and form using a variety of brushstrokes, different techniques and spontaneity of mark making to produce contemporary, expressive paintings.
Inspired primarily from life, particularly nature. She is especially interested in the relationship between the variety of colours and mixing them to create richness and vibrancy.
Her collection of work is the abundance of flowers and foliage.
In her large canvases, mixed bunches of garden and wildflowers are collected in vintage jugs. She combines the chaos of colour, shape and structure of the unruly flowers against the stark simplicity of the old, simple ceramics vessels. Pip wanted to get a sense of the natural forms rather than a representational view. Using oil paint, oil pastels and oil bars to create those feelings of leaves, waxy and shiny and flowers layered, to get solid form, but also wiped back, to create translucent papery petals. Abstracting shapes and forms. Touching still life, as well as looking, allowing the natural to dominate.
The series of paintings in the Wild Meadows collection are Pip's representation of forgotten gardens and summer open meadows. Nature left to its own devices. Weeds, entangled flowers, grasses, bushes growing unkempt, but still those wild flowers continue to flourish and burst with colour.
Spontaneous, gestural, mark making with semi-abstract forms, combined with space and colour to capture that rich mix of diverse, wild beauty found in nature.
Originally from Brighton, England. Pip currently lives and works in Canada. She studied Textile design at Nottingham Trent University. For over twenty years Pip has designed fashion fabrics and worked in illustration and design, often with florals and plants. Loose, tight, expressive or to a specific brief. Her paintings are an extension of this narrative, but with a different freedom, new energy and a continued love of colour.

KELLY BALLARD
Be a gardener with my Heart
Be a gardener with my heart.
Come, visit me every day.
Nourish me with clean waters.
Let the sun shine in
Appreciate my beauty in all seasons
and I will be reborn
every Spring.
Marching into your heart
Storming your senses with a glory
that never departs.
Springtime
Spring calls us to begin anew.
We’ve been broken by the elements,
just right.
Vulnerable to new growth
when possibility matters.
What shall be summoned into being?
Who seeks to overthrow my scheming?
Oh Spring, has marched in,
sporting a great, big grin - always ready to win.
She is emerging with the Sun.
She has come undone.
Wanting a Springtime
A sort of ME design.
Neither wind nor snow
Will slow our go.
For Spring is Rising in me,
here by the sea,
The borning of Spring again…
Resurrection
I saw the Resurrection this morning.
On my way to the ocean’s edge.
The crocuses are rising.
Bright purple and golden yellow
Marking the Earth
With blessings of the Glory.
Gardens left to wither in the Autumn
Now rush alive to peak rosy possibilities.
New life is rising in yesterday’s ashes.
Meeting the Sun as true good mates.
Welcome for the Return,
The Resurrection has begun.
Flutter My Heart, BC
Once I grew a garden with flowers as tall as trees
It brought me to my knees.
Yes, my blooms filled my soul,
yet I still vibrated with dis-ease.
I traveled to far off lands,
Stepping where angels want to mingle.
Footsteps of the past,
Echoing, “At last.”
I found a new home in a foreign land
To build my treetop studio.
High up, hidden in the clouds
Transforming
The Color of Night
Into Possibilities.
I Set my compass True North.
The Color of Light
A Twinkling hue.
The Color of Joy
Flutter my Heart brand new.
Flutter My Heart, BC is my love note to British Columbia. I moved to Vancouver in January of 2024. I had never been to BC previously yet quickly, I was smitten. The diverse population is invigorating. The air pulses with exotic tongues. The Sunshine Coast is one jaw dropping surprise after another. The trail systems are keenly maintained. Nature is up close and personal. It is beauty to wonder in seconds flat.
This show include selections from three collections: Flutter My Heart, BC - Butterflies & Moths of BC; The Shiny Bug Collection - Insects Inspiring Victorian Bling; and Pretty, Little Wings. I want the viewer to see more. More color. More life. Perhaps even learn something fun too! By immersing the viewer in the vibrant color of watercolors and using forms of the natural world surrounding us all - I hope to increase the viewers visual language. Be it a new color, a different angle or a glorious, wee insect, suddenly the world expands. By increasing the size of the insects, the viewer can pause, evan sink into a closer look - to see more.
Kelly Ballard is a Vancouver based artist and poet presently working in watercolors. Kelly’s art is grounded in the Divine Feminine. Her vibrant art invites play and creativity. By enlarging the insects’ size, she draws you in to take a closer look - enabling you to see more. Through easy ‘how to’ videos of painting the insects, she breaks watercolors into accessible steps. Drawing the viewer in to be a participant in ART. Do ART.
Watercolors are a new medium for Kelly as previously working in fabric, acrylic paint, pastels, photography and poetry. Inspired by the new environment and color of British Columbia, Kelly began to paint with watercolors. Through watercolors, Kelly is able to achieve the vivid color of the magical natural world we all inhabit. She has degrees in both Studio Art and English from the University of Vermont. Kelly is a Mom, Artist, Poet, Mental Health Advocate and so much more.
